Hours after saying goodbye to her "Good Morning America" family Thursday morning, co-anchor Robin Roberts lost her mother Lucimarian Roberts. The 88-year-old died Thursday night, reported ABC News Friday.
Roberts, who was scheduled to start medical leave Friday for treatment of a blood disorder, left a day early to travel with her sister Sally Ann to Pass Christian, Miss., to see her ailing mother.
She did arrive, after traveling through flooded areas caused by hurricane Isaac, to "hold hands" with her mother before she passed away, said co-anchor Diane Sawyer on the show.
"Sad news to report today. Robin's beloved mother Lucimarian passed away overnight. We'll have a full tribute on the show this morning," reported co-anchor George Stephanopoulos on air.
"All of our thoughts and prayers go out to Robin and her family today.” was posted on "Good Morning America's Facebook page Friday.
Mrs. Roberts has appeared as a guest of the morning talk show several times.
Lucimarian Roberts was the first African-American to head Mississippi's board of education. She also collaborated with her daughter on a book titled, "My Story, My Song — Mother-Daughter Reflections on Life and Faith, reported WABC-TV.
