"Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin has been snapped up in a two-year deal with HBO.

George R.R. Martin, who should be busy writing the next book in his "Songs of Ice and Fire" series, has cashed in on the golden cow that is HBO's series "Game of Thrones" and signed a two-year deal with the network.

The industry site Deadline.com reports that Martin will continue as co-executive producer on "Game of Thrones," which starts its new season March 31. The deal also has the writer set to develop and produce new series projects for HBO.

He's not exactly a stranger to writing for TV, as Martin first captured me as fan with the original "Beauty and the Beast" way back in the day. I am rather bothered by this news, however, because "Winds of Winter" is likely to be a longer time coming now that this two-year deal has been inked. As I talked about in a previous post, it's not uncommon for there to be a five-year wait for fans who are salivating to read the continuing story of Westeros. Can we now expect him to delay "Winds of Winter" until 2020?

If there's a silver lining here, it's that Martin is a genius at creating characters, and whatever show(s) he creates for HBO is bound to be amazing (and hopefully will steal some of the thunder from that network's current darling, Lena Dunham of "Girls," whom I loathe and admire with equal intensity).
