Pit bulls used to be referred to as "the nanny dog."
Want a good reason to get a tattoo? How about charity? Specifically, helping a rescue organization that focuses on pit bulls.
Paw Prints for Pit bulls is a fundraiser for Legacy of Hope Dog Rescue. Two tattoo artists from Inkjunkys, 7123 S. 92nd E. Ave., will be donating their time from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, to tattoo a 1 in. by 1 in. paw print tattoo for customers. The cost for each tattoo will be $25, and all proceeds benefit the rescue organization. For an additional $25, you can get a name tattooed along with the paw print.
Only walk-ins, no appointments taken. And only cash is being accepted.
Legacy of Hope Dog Rescue, currently keeping dogs in foster homes until it gets enough funding for a facility, rescued and found homes for 180 dogs last year, and close to 100 dogs this year, said co-founder Laci Dutra.
Dutra said their organization is one of the few that takes in pit bulls.
"Pit bull breeds are in grave distress," she said. "Of all dogs in shelters, 70-75 percent are pit bulls or pit bull mixes. Only 1 in 600 dogs of this breed will find a home and the remainder are euthanized."
Dutra said this is due to pervasive negative about the breed, which makes people reluctant to adopt them.
"Yet in the past, this breed was the most popular in the country, immortalized as the marine mascot, and was affectionately known as 'the nanny dog,'" she said.
And she has a final reminder foe people: "A dog's behavior is a reflection of the personality traits of his or her owner and not the reverse."
