Who had the greatest impact on Kelley’s 26-22 win at McAlester last Friday night? Or what?
Senior guard Brady Goforth threw two TD passes and scored on a short quarterback sneak. He also gave the Comets a lift with his punting.
Goforth hadn’t punted all season. But the Comets tried something different to loosen up the Buffs by allowing him to kick from shotgun formation on fourth down.
He responded with six punts for a 46.7-yard average. He had a 44-yarder to pin the Buffs on their own eight in the first quarter, and another 50-yarder in the first half.
Perhaps the key play in the game was his 61-yard punt in the fourth quarter. Nursing its four-point lead, Kelley was backed up to its 8 with about five minutes left.
Goforth’s booming shot sent the Buffs back to their own 31. Since McAlester’s final drive ended at the Comets’ 8, it’s fair to think the Buffs might have won the game – had Goforth’s punt been 10 yards shorter.
The Comets can only hope for the same kind of effectiveness when they host Memorial in a key District 5A-3 battle on Friday night. A win would give the Comets only their second district title since 1985.
