Is that Jay-Z and Kanye West on the first song leading into "The Great Gatsby" trailer?
The genre works well in those action movies where good guys chase bad guys across building roofs, in teen flicks about an out-of-control night of pranks, even perhaps your romantic comedy with a pan of some cityscape before a later, ironic scene around a dinner table with Michael Bublé playing in the background. I could deal. But my Gatsby? My green light Gatsby? Any song less indicative of a time outside of the 1920s would have been better – and they do exist.
The 1974 version with Mia Farrow and Robert Redford of the film was perfect, the hope is that this winter’s Gatsby, by Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet) is an equal revisit or an even better adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic. Contemporary pop culture worked in R + J since that story is so theme driven and transcends time, but with Gatsby, the context is paramount. Still, if the new trailer tells anything – sans the “Watch The Throne” refer - this movie is going to be sharp and Christmas 2012 can’t come soon enough.
