Oklahoma State fans have talked a lot this offseason about the quarterback who got away.

But on Saturday during media day, OSU coach Mike Gundy talked a little about the one who didn't.

In the spring of 2012, when Wes Lunt was named the Cowboys' starting quarterback, there was talk Clint Chelf might decide to leave the program after being relegated to third string.

Instead, Chelf stayed and took over the starting job when injuries sidelined Lunt and J.W. Walsh.

Chelf became such a favorite to be named this year's starter that it was Lunt who decided to leave the program after this spring's practice.

"Personally, I think the players talked him into staying. That's just my personal opinion," Gundy said of Chelf's decision to stay at OSU. "His teammates wanted him here."

It turned out to be a good thing for both Chelf and the program. Chelf threw for 1,588 yards and 15 touchdowns, while starting the final five games of the season.
