I missed this by a day -- too busy concerned about another birthday that took place yesterday -- but Jan. 29th, 1845, was the day perhaps the most famous American poem was published: Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven."

This year is something of a Poe watershed, as 2009 marks both the bicentennial of Poe's birth and the 160th anniversary of his death.

We'll be reviewing Peter Ackroyd's POE: A LIFE CUT SHORT in an upcoming issue.

But in honor of "The Raven," check out this recitation by John Astin (best known as Gomez on the TV series "The Addams Family"). His physical resemblance to Poe in this clip is a little unnerving, but his way of performing the poem quite excellent.
