The time has nearly come. Mumford & Sons and friends will transform Guthrie for a two-day festival Friday and Saturday.
The Gentlemen of the Road tour will also feature Alabama Shakes (who played an amazing show at Cain's Ballroom earlier this summer), Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, Haim, Phosphorescent and others.
About 35,000 people are expected to attend the outdoor festival. That's more than three times the population of Guthrie.
There are several bands slated to play, many I was not familiar with. So, I dug through and found some favorites from each of the bands playing this weekend. And I put those favorites in a playlist. Here is that playlist.
As I said before, Alabama Shakes was spellbinding at Cain's. I also saw Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes earlier this year, and they put on a great show. The band's frontman, Alex Ebert, has energy for days and puts on a fantastic show. (Their song Man on Fire was used in the trailer for August: Osage County, which everyone around here is just thrilled about.)
The other nine bands each bring something a little different to the bill. Haim really stuck out to me, with a great sound made better by the female singers. Justin Townes Earle, son of Texas songwriter Steve Earle, is just a fantastic country-folk sound all his own.
But every band will be worth a listen. So, preview them here and check them out if you're going to the shows this weekend. Also, be sure to explore Guthrie. The town is rolling out the red-dirt carpet for visitors from across the country. It'll be a big time.
