DALLAS — Purdue interim coach Patrick Higgins says Oklahoma State’s offense is “so hard to prepare for” because the Cowboys run the ball and pass the ball with equal proficiency.

But the Cowboy Way could look decidedly different when the teams meet Tuesday in the Heart of Dallas Bowl because Todd Monken isn’t coaching Cowboy quarterbacks, he didn’t spend December scouting or game-planning, and come New Year’s Day, he will not be calling plays.

Head coach Mike Gundy has taken over most of those duties, and he’s included the rest of the offensive staff in everything else.

“I've had to go back to work, that's for sure,” Gundy said Monday during a press conference at Cotton Bowl Stadium.

Gundy often said what set Monken apart as a great coach was his intelligence.

Sure, the Cowboys have some smart coaches on staff. They’ll have a game plan up and ready. They know what they’re doing.

But when someone’s best quality is his IQ, how do you replace that?

“We lost an organizer, a quarterback coach and a play caller,” Gundy said.

“I think it's important that people realize,” Gundy said, “that we have guys on our offensive staff that have been here a long time and they understand the offense and they have a good feel for practice plans and adjustments and scripting and game day calling, for that matter.

“We feel good about our preparation. We feel good about our game plan.”
