Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) hangs up her surgical gloves and her Glock 26 in Wednesday's episode of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 9 p.m. on CBS, channel 6. ANDREW MACPHERSON/CBS

CSI Catherine Willows once asked her supervisor Gil Grissom "What would you do without me?”

Well, Gil who left the series last year won’t be there to see original cast member Marg Helgenberger, aka Willows, on ”CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” say her goodbyes to the series Wednesday.

The actress, whose star power was evident when she played a hooker in “China Beach” and as the recurring love interest of George Clooney’s character in “ER,” is leaving the series after 12 seasons and more than 260 episodes. Her original plan was to leave at the end season 11 but she agreed to wait until episode 12 this season for a proper send-off.

Her final episode involves CSI superviser DB Russell (Ted Danson) and repercussions of his examination of last season’s crime-solving techniques.

What’s she going to be doing? Relaxing, hiking with her dog and looking for work, maybe (hopefully some day) a Broadway role, she said in a recent interview. The 53-year-old will see her place on the “CSI" team filled by actress Elizabeth Shue, a new character fresh out of anger management training and with a past experience with DB Russell’s way of working. And not in a good way.

Helgenberger said she would love to return for a special episode or two if the opportunity arises.
