Here's what I have learned from HBO's 'Hard Knocks' about fantasy football

It's interesting what happens when you try to build something.

In Miami, the Dolphins decided to let HBO's cameras record what the process is like during this year's training camp. The weekly series "Hard Knocks" is one of the few reasons why I pay extra for HBO. The cameras have been there for some interesting behind-the-scene moments as this team tries to build something out of decades of losing.

So far we have watched as the coach cut diva receiver Chad Johnson, essentially ending any chance he has to play again.

We have seen what kind of person offensive coordinator Mike Sherman is. He personally attacked Charles Clay, the former Tulsa standout, in front of the whole offense during a meeting. Clay, if Sherman had watched any games last season, is one of the only players on his offense who can play.

Tonight's episode showed the first round of cuts. Guys who have played the game since elementary school were told they aren't good enough to be a part of a team that might win three games. One of their best defensive players, a former No. 1 pick three years ago, was traded to the Colts.

Here's something I took away: Sometimes the experts are wrong.

A quick look of the fantasy rankings at this time last year: The experts had Andre Johnson and Roddy White ahead of Calvin Johnson, who buried the competition.

Peyton Hillis, who was playing for Cleveland, was three spots ahead of LeSean McCoy. McCoy scored 20 touchdowns. Hillis had 3.

Most of the players who got cut by the Dolphins told the cameras that we have not seen the last of them.

History shows they may be right. Fantasy's consensus No. 1 running back Arian Foster couldn't make the Texans roster after not being drafted thanks to hardly playing at Tennessee in college. He worked his way from the practice squad to one of the richest running backs in the game.

So when you are building your fantasy team during the draft, do the research, do the comparisons but don't be afraid of going your own way. Draft who you think will help you win, rather than draft because that is what ESPN's top 200 tells you to pick.

The best teams are built with guys you believe in.

Other great picks by the experts last year:

Michael Vick over Tom Brady. (I like that pick this year, though.)

Rob Gronkowski ranked 20th overall in tight ends, two spots below Benjamin Watson of the Browns.

A.J. Green ranked 37th in wide receivers, nine spots behind Mike Thomas of the Jags (currently the No. 4 receiver on that team).

Fred Jackson the 27th best running back, three spots behind Knowshon Moreno.

Cam Newton the 21st best quarterback, after Colt McCoy.
