Union coach Kirk Fridrich has been impressed by the senior leadership on the Class 6A's four-time defending state football champions.

An example of that leadership occurred during Wednesday's practice, the second of the fall.

"Players were coaching themselves instead of worrying how hot it was, or how to get out of practice or to get another drink of water," Fridrich said. "Devon Davis (returning starting cornerback) was talking to Marquice Fletcher, who is in his first year at corner after being a safety last year.

"Devin was saying to him, `Hey you need to make this adjustment or change the way you’re playing this technique. don't forget this.'
When you see those two guys coaching each other in the heat of a practice, to me that's the leadership you need and when you have that, you have a chance to be pretty special." ...

Muskogee named Josh Berry as its new boys basketball coach. Berry has been Rogers' girls coach the past two seasons, including a berth in the 2011 state tournament. Berry is a Booker T. Washington graduate and played on the Hornets' 2002 state title team.

Berry succeeds Lloyd Williams, who is leaving after one season to move with his wife, Amy, who was hired as the University of South Dakota's women's basketball coach after having that position for five years at Rogers State.
