In his 17 seasons as Jenks' head coach, Allan Trimble can't remember ever playing a freshman quarterback in a varsity game before Cooper Nunley did last Thursday against Edison.

Nunley relieved starter Kyle Alexander to open the second half of Jenks' 82-7 win. Jenks scored a TD on Nunley's first play and later scored another TD on his first pass -- a 14-yarder to sophomore Trevor Stewart.

"I really appreciate Cooper," Trimble said. "He could be starring and playing every game with the freshmen, but we asked him to move up to try to develop him.

"I'm really proud of him. He’s been a good practice player and good at playing his role. For a ninth-grader to be able to do that, he’s been great for us. We think he's going to be good. We're real excited about him and he's a real hard working young man."

Top-ranked 6A Jenks (2-2) hosts Sapulpa (3-1) on Friday night.

"It will be good not have to get on a bus," Trimble said, referring to Jenks playing its first four games this season and last two in 2011 away from Hunter-Dwelley Stadium. ...

Second-ranked 5A East Central's 4-0 start looks even more impressive now than it did a couple weeks ago. The Cardinals' 53-31 win over Del City in the season opener gained stature after Del City thumped then-No. 3 Lawton MacArthur 41-18 last week. East Central's Week 2 opponent, 6A Bartlesville, is 3-1.
