How well does Tulsa's Bill Blankenship recruit? We're about to find out

The Tulsa football team practices for the first time in 2013 on Saturday, picked as a favorite in Conference USA but with enough question marks to make things interesting.

One of the curiosities about Bill Blankenship the college coach has been his ability to recruit.

Blankenship's sense of humor about the topic is wonderful. He'll sometimes joke that everyone thought all he did as head coach at Union High School was recruit so he can't understand why they don't think he can now.

There's no doubt he's done an excellent job selling Tulsa as a destination for high school players in Oklahoma. I really think he's won over some folks in the state who felt abandoned in recent years by Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

But now we get to the most important question: How good are these guys?

We're about to find out. Only 18 players remain from Tulsa's 2010 team, a group that went 10-3 in Todd Graham's last season as coach.

Blankenship has been an unqualified success in his first two years, winning 19 games and one C-USA title. If he wants to continue that success in 2013, he'll have to rebuild almost his entire defense.

According to the two-deep chart in this year's Hurricane media guide, Blankenship will attempt to do that with 10 players who are either freshmen or sophomores.

There are 10 more underclassmen on the offensive two-deep, including five on the offensive line.

If Blankenship the recruiter is as good as Blankenship the head coach, then he and the Hurricane could be laughing all the way to another league title.
