"The Pioneer Woman" cooking show premieres Saturday on Food Network.
You'll have to forgive me because I'm still on the subject of food TV, after yesterday's post about
Anthony Bourdain vs. Paula Deen.
I've always had favorite foodie shows set on my DVR, and Bourdain's "No Reservations" is at the top of my list, along with "Top Chef" on Bravo. Love the drama.
Those are the real-deal shows, in my opinion, that focus on cuisine and technique. Love finding out about exotic -- and sometimes surprisingly ordinary -- food and how it intertwines with culture.
When I first became interested in cooking as a hobby about 10 years ago, the Food Network's shows were actually about cooking. Now it seems they are more geared toward prime-time competitions and reality shows.
But there's a terrific, tiny pocket of scheduling that occurs on Saturday mornings, and it's become my favorite Saturday morning ritual since the Smurfs. These are more relaxed and feature ideas that a home cook like myself could actually pull off.
I love Ina Garten, aka "The Barefoot Contessa," (I even got to interview her by phone last year -- I was so nervous, I was literally sweating). And one of my new favorites, is "Dessert First" with Anne Thornton. I also enjoy "Secrets of a Restaurant Chef" with Anne Burrell, as well Alex Guarnaschelli's "Alex's Day Off."
But buckle up for this Saturday because we'll finally get to watch Oklahoma's own
Ree Drummond, aka The Pioneer Woman, as her much-anticipated Food Network cooking show debuts. I think she's making chicken fried steak.
What are your favorite cooking/chef shows? And which ones do you hate?
