Time is running out to get your school supplies. While some people dread that annual shopping trip, I enjoy it.

The array of colorful pens. The rows of decorated notebooks. Folders and binders of all sizes and colors. I love to browse the aisles, smelling the fruity markers and seeing what's new every year.

My younger daughter's school offers prepaid school supplies -- pay a set amount at the end of the year and someone does all the shopping over the summer and delivers the supplies to your child's classroom before school starts. It's a pretty neat deal.

The first couple of years I didn't take advantage of it because I knew I could find the school supplies cheaper -- and I did. But it took multiple trips and strategically shopping various sales. These days I just sign up and pay the money, knowing that my kid will have the same supplies as most of her class, which can save an argument or two.

Besides, I still get to shop with my older daughter. And in middle school, your school supplies are a personal statement. So we haggle over the price of "cool" graphic notebooks vs. plain-colored pads of paper.

I also like to look at the sales fliers and will often pick up extra markers, crayons and office supplies for home use.

One thing I've learned is that I can't skimp on backpacks. After buying "cute" for a couple of years, the frustration of rips and broken zippers was just too much. I now spend more on higher-priced backpacks (I've had great luck with JanSport), and the girls know that they have to use them for two years. So far, that hasn't been a problem.

How do you approach your school supply shopping -- are you a bargain hunter or grab-it-and-go shopper? What are your tips?
