I love older people -- and ice cream (but not together)

When I typed "old people" into the newsroom's photo system, George was the 10th photo to pop up. That makes me sad.

What's the most embarrassing thing ...

As I confessed in my Tuesday column, I'm a clumsy hooker.

But I'm also nosy, as I want to hear about YOUR most embarrassing ...

Is it really vandalism when it's a sticker with the words "nipple clamps"?

Aside from enjoying humorous ones spied on others' automobiles, I'm not a fan of bumper stickers.

I blame my father, ...

Where is the oddest place you've ever taken cover during bad weather?

During last week's bad weather, when a tornado siren sounded around midnight, I was caught at a midtown QuikTrip.

Today's favorite quote: "I'd rather live six months and eat all the ice cream I want than go six years without having any."

A very nice gentleman by the name of Mr. Russell told me that on the phone earlier this afternoon. He left a voicemail for me before I arrived at work, so I called him back -- somewhat apprehensively, as he only said, "Mr. Ashley" -- I get that a lot on the phone; that and, "Yes, ma'am. Uh, I mean, Miss Jason. Mr. Jason, sorry." Anyway ... "Please call me back at" such-and-such number, click. Frequently, especially if it's a Tuesday morning, that means someone wants to complain about something I wrote or tell me I'm going to hell or whatever. Great way to start the day.

But I called Mr. Russell back, and his wife answered the phone.

"It's that newspaper guy," she hollered at Mr. Russell, who picked up the phone a few minutes later. I was soon informed he was 86 and had some more information I might find interesting about Ehrle's (wrote a story about it last week, see it?).

Through the course of our conversation, I was reminded how much I love older people. Mr. Russell knew the original owners of Ehrle's -- not just from here, but many years before when Mr. Russell was growing up in Texas, and Mr. Ehrle hired him. Later, after Mr. Russell married a lovely young woman from Biloxi, Miss. (who graduated from Grand Bay High School in Alabama in the early 1940s -- the same high school I attended my sophomore year), they moved to Tulsa. And, as you know, so did the Ehrle's.

It was a nice, front porch-kinda convo that doesn't seem to happen much anymore with people in passing these days. Reminded me of going to the Post Office with Mamaw Wright during childhood summers and standing there while she talked to Mrs. So-and-So or Mr. What's His Name from years gone by. I miss that, especially this time of year. That, and eating watermelon while watching "Days of Our Lives."

OK, that's all I got. Yeah, I told y'all yesterday I'd talk about today's trip to the nutritionist at HELP -- but I'll save that for Monday. Meanwhile, please pray this knee thing resolves itself, as FGP and I have our first Route 66 Marathon training run tomorrow at 6:30 a.m.

Peace, love and six months of ice cream ... XOXO
