Jena Malone has been offered the sought-after role as tribute Johanna Mason in "The Hunger Games" sequel "Catching Fire," according to hollywoodreporter.com.

Malone, last seen Nancy McCoy in the History Channel's hit mini-series "Hatfields & McCoys" last month, has been "offered the part and is in early negotiations," the website reported Tuesday.

The role of the smart-mouthed Mason continues into the third installment, titled "Mockingjay," of the film trilogy based on the books by Suzanne Collins.

If Malone, who also starred as Rocket in "Sucker Punch" and Lydia bennett in "Pride & Prejudice," takes the role, she will play the Hunger Games winner from District 7 who, with an axe as her weapon, aligns herself with Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) when they are forced to return to the arena and face death all over again in an all-stars match where only one can win.
