Joss Whedon
To say that Marvel Studios and Disney are happy with the results after hiring Joss Whedon to write and direct "The Avengers," this year's biggest hit, is an understatement.
They wanted him back for a sequel, and they've finally gotten their man. Whedon will again do double-duty on "The Avengers 2," Disney CEO Bob Iger announced Tuesday.
There was some question as to whether Whedon would return. The man who's a comic-book fan and who built his reputation with TV cult-favorites like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly" clearly had his choice of projects after the success of "The Avengers."
But Disney -- which also owns ABC -- must have sweetened the pot. Whedon will not only make the next "Avengers" movie, but he will also create a live-action TV series for the TV network based on Marvel characters, Iger said.
Which characters? That is unknown. Who else will be back for "The Avengers 2?" Also unknown.
But executives -- like Iger, who made the announcement to stock earnings analysts -- must be breathing a sigh of relief at knowing that the talent behind the camera for their megahit is again a member of their team.
"The Avengers" is the No. 3 film in the history of both North American box-office ($616.8 million) and worldwide box-office ($1.46 billion).
