The Kifer family is throwing a party for former staffers and customers of the old Grapevine, a popular Brookside wine bar and restaurant for 26 years.

Joen Kifer and sons Joe and Mark will host a celebration 7-10 p.m. Saturday at VFW 577, 1109 E. Sixth St.

Joen’s husband, the late Nelson Kifer, opened Grapevine in 1981 in the Stonehorse Shopping Center, now the Consortium, 3509 S. Peoria Ave.

“Admission is free, and donations will be accepted for food costs,” Joe Kifer said in a Facebook message. “We will be featuring some old favorite Vine appetizers, a cash bar and a whole block of free parking.”

The Kifer family sold the restaurant in 1998. It had several owners since before getting a name change in 2007. Today it is Doc’s Food & Wine.

“The party is open to the public,” Kifer said. “I’ve heard so many Grapevine stories, I figured it was time for everyone we could find to get together again.”
