Oklahoma football by the numbers, coming out of the Florida A&M scrimmage and heading into the first of two September bye weeks...

5
Consecutive games in which Landry Jones has fallen short of 300 passing yards

This is a guy who owns six of the top seven single-game yardage totals in OU history, and eight of the top 11. He used to drop off 400-yard games like other quarterbacks completed slants.

Friday, I blogged that Jones was "way overdue a monster game."

Let's change that to "waaaay overdue a monster game."

Let's also recall that Jones destroyed Kansas State with a 505-yard blitzkrieg in Manhattan last year. He had 481 yards, and OU's single-game record, by the start of the fourth quarter.

Maybe all he needs is a little purple in his life. He'll see it in the Sooners' next game Sept. 22.

349
OU's rushing yardage against FAMU, their third-highest total under Bob Stoops

Damien Williams gained 156 on his own. The Sooners rushed for 8 touchdowns, which likely hasn't happened since the end of the Switzer Era.

Was that a product of OU's might or FAMU's fragility? We'll find out Sept. 22. Kansas State limited Miami to 40 rushing yards on 29 tries Saturday in Manhattan.

Number of big plays turned in by Justin Brown Saturday night

The Penn State transfer had punt returns of 62 and 43 yards, and he caught a 46-yard bomb (despite being interfered with) to set up an OU touchdown in the second quarter.

I suspected that coaches were a little over the top in their daily praise of Brown in preseason camp. I figured they were just excited to have some good news to counteract some of the injury/suspension buzz, and also pleased to give Brown a way out of Happy Valley.

Nope. The guy can really, really play.

16
Number of catches for Kenny Stills, including a career-high 10 Saturday night

He continues to make me look foolish for thinking Trey Metoyer would be OU's leading receiver. I'm not sure if he has made anyone forget all about Ryan Broyles -- even he insists "I'm not Ryan."

However, he sure is making us all forget about the Stills who looked so foggy after Broyles went down a year ago.

With Jones off to a shaky start, Stills is OU's offensive MVP two weeks into the new season. I give him the nod over Williams.

5
Number of tackles for reserve Aaron Franklin against FAMU, a team high

Mike Stoops was able to sub liberally against the FCS Rattlers. Franklin and Frank Shannon got in a lot of work at linebacker. Marquis Anderson and Jordan Phillips played more at defensive tackle. Rashod Favors, P.L. Lindley, Mike Onuoha and Charles Tapper all played D-end. Lamar Harris and Gary Simon rotated in at cornerback.

The starters will shoulder the load from here on out. Still, it helps the Sooners to get the understudies some much-needed game situation snaps.
