Let it snow...or not

How do Tulsa's June temperatures compare with last June?

Rains improve drought conditions, but we're still on the edge

The deluge earlier this month was exciting. For a second, I though that maybe the near-record parched May was just a fluke ...

Looking at the forecast on Friday and even parts of Saturday, it looked like Tulsa could be in for a doozie of a snow event today.

Well, that’s the funny thing about the future: It turns out it is still hard to predict.

Some of the models late last week said that a significant snow event was possible, but forecasters repeatedly cautioned that there was a lot of variance in those models, anything from a cold rain to several inches of snow.

Well, as it got closer, the picture came into focus and, well, no snow for us in the metro.

Further south and east is a different story.

This is a photo of my childhood home in western Arkansas, about 15 miles from the Oklahoma border, graciously submitted by my father.

It’s really coming down out there! Or was…that was taken before 8 a.m. Monday. He said they had about an inch there.

Down in the mountains of southeast Oklahoma saw more, but nothing insane. Storm reports from the National Weather Service at 11 a.m. said 2 inches fell in Heavener and Hodgen, in Le Flore County. An inch was reported in Poteau. Most of those were reported in the higher elevations.

The National Weather Service said Highway 259 from Octavia to Big Cedar was closed temporarily due to the snow.

Some places in the mountains down there could see up to 4 inches, according to NWS.

Again, not the big event some models were predicting, but not totally insignificant for those folks either. (It might be a good time to review your winter weather safety tips, too)

Here in Tulsa, we’re just going to get the cold. Highs today will struggle to get above 40. Tomorrow, we’re looking to top out at 35.

And the chill will be here for a while. The rest of the week looks sunny and cold, with highs maybe getting to the 50s by the end of the week and lows consistently below freezing.

Welcome to winter, folks! (well…not officially winter, but you know what I mean.)
