Product stories are not something I do, typically, but the 3DPeepsight caught my attention because it’s 100 percent made in Oklahoma and invented by a couple of guys who are just bowhunters who stumbled on something by virtue of their passion for the sport.

There was an interesting story there.

Lane Bruder and Victor Borland have come up with a simple, inexpensive way to add a new dimension to archery, and that just doesn’t happen every day. Some guys really get into long-distance rifle shooting, maybe the future will have people getting into long-distance archery.

When Bruder suggested I bring my bow when I came to Stillwater to do the story I didn’t hesitate. If I were to write about this thing a firsthand experience with my own equipment would be a good experience. Frankly, though, I thought I’d pull out my 9-year-old Hoyt RazorTec and they’d say it wasn’t up to the task and that would be that.

Now that I’ve gone and brought up the tricky issue of arrow speed and bow performance let me just up and dodge the inevitable debate about power and speed in new bows that I’m not equipped to get into here. Archers, especially compound bow aficionados, can get into some very technical debates when it comes to the minute details involved in the physics of drawstroke, string speed and arrow performance.

Suffice to say that I shoot an older bow and I point that out because technology in newer bows is all about increased arrow speed without sacrificing accuracy. If my older bow can be set up to smack a block at 120 yards or more, newer ones can too.

But is it something you should do? That’s entirely up to you. I had the experience of hitting a target at long range – hitting a bulls-eye no less – and now I’m hooked, or at least intrigued to the point I want to play with it some more.

Would I consider shooting a deer at 100-plus yards? I can’t imagine the situation where I personally would want to consider that. For one thing my eyes just aren’t that good. Does the idea of being better equipped physically and mentally to pop an antelope, elk or moose at 75 or 80 yards appeal to me? Yes.

While the 3DPeepsight makes shooting those long-distance targets easier, don’t get the idea that it’s easy. As with any new sight system the apparatus on my bow is going to take tinkering and practice to get it where I want it.

The first time I set up my original sights I made quite a few trips back and forth to the bag at 20 yards before I was satisfied. Doing that at 100+ yards is going to take a lot of time and effort.

What I like about the 3DPeepsight is that I can still have my regular pins set up to hit at 20 to 60 yards as I always have, the long-distance ranges just come as a bonus.

In coming days I’ll practice with my bow like usual and get the sight pins set at 20 to 60 like normal. Then I’ll go out to a wide-open spot and see what other ranges the 3DPeepsight allows me to play with.

It should be fun and, really, isn't that what it's all about?
