The state high school basketball tournaments start Thursday and will run through Saturday. The 6A and 5A tournaments are in Tulsa with ORU's Mabee Center as the main site. Sub-sites Thursday are Skiatook (6A boys), Catoosa (5A boys) and Sapulpa (5A girls).

The 4A through 2A tournaments are in Oklahoma City. With tickets at only $5 per session, it is one of the biggest bargains in sports...

Aaron Daniels is back at the state tournament as an assistant coach for the 6A Muskogee girls team.

Daniels was a starter on Central's state champions in 2006 and another state tournament team in '07. He made a quick transition to coaching after attending Murray State in Tishomingo and USAO.

"I've got good memories from my last time I was at ORU," Daniels said, referring to the '06 tournament. "I'm hoping history will repeat. Our team has really hit its stride the last 10 or 11 games."

Daniels got connected at Muskogee with the help of his high school coach, Terry Scott, who is a Muskogee administrator.

"i am thankful to him (Scott) and (girls head coach) Doyle Rowland for taking a chance on me. It's been a great ride to get here and it's a blessing to be here as a coach."

The World used to have students pick football games and Daniels was excellent with predictions when he was at Central. So does he have a pick for this week?

"I'll just say state tournaments are unpredictable," Daniels said.

Muskogee plays Midwest City at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals...

Edison will open the 6A boys state tournament against Putnam City at 2 p.m. Thursday. Putnam City is in the state tournament for the 12th time in 13 years while Edison makes its fifth appearance in six years, but first in 6A. Putnam City has reached the title game seven times in the last 11 years.

"Putnam City has a lot of tradition," Edison coach Michael Parish said. "Our challenge is to convince our players we are playing this year's Putnam City team and not their past state champions.

"Putnam City is a powerhouse and coach A.D. Burtschi does a great job. Their only glaring weakness is they are a young team, but sometimes that can be an advantage because the players may just go out and play and not think so much about what is on the line."...

Cascia Hall coach Brian Rahilly sees some similarities between his team this year and his 2009 state champions. The Commandos face Vinita at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Midwest City Carl Albert. Both of those Cascia teams reached state through the area consolation final.

"The teams are much the same," Rahilly said. "Neither had a big scorer and they really are teams that are the sum of their parts."

Rahilly is friends with Vinita coach Tony Roach. Last year, Vinita edged Cascia 50-46 in the area consolation final.

"I like the way his team plays, our teams are very similar," Rahilly said. "It's going to be a good game."...

In doing research on Thursday's story on the Union boys' bid for a perfect season, I compiled five notable teams that suffered their only loss in the state tournament. I looked up the Tulsa Tribune story that described the 1965 Central team's state tournament loss and then noticed the writer was Bill Harper, who is a World newsroom night editor. I asked him about the game and he remembered it well. A memory that stands out for him was how gracious Central coach Eddie Sutton was talking with him after the heartbreaking loss.

Earlier this week, ORU radio broadcaster Geoff Haxton praised on the air Eddie Sutton's son, Scott, for his willingness to always come on the postgame show and give a good interview even after a disappointing loss as had just occurred for his Golden Eagles team in the Summit League tournament semifinals.
