Lovera’s Cheese Company brought home two awards from a national cheese making competition.

And if you are interested in trying some of their award-winning cheese, save the date for a garden party at Lover’s on Sept. 7.

It’s the second year in a row that Lovera’s has gained national recognition by placing in the most prestigious cheese contest in the country, according to Lovera’s cheese maker, Shawn Duffy.

This year’s American Cheese Society Conference and Competition was held in the cheese capitol, Madison, Wis. On August 2nd, the winners of the cheese making contest were announced.

Lovera’s braided Caciocavera cheese was awarded first place in the mozzarella category. This cheese was a new twist on their standard gourd shaped hand-formed Caciocavera cheese. They pull the cheese into long ropes and then braided, adding an interesting textural component and flavor, Duffy said.

Lovera’s Batista took the bronze in the Pasta Filata (stretched-curd, i.e. Provolone, Caciocavallo, Scamorza etc.) category. Batista is a mixed-milk Caciocavallo-style cheese, made with a 50/50 blend of Jersey cows’ milk and La Mancha goats’ milk.

Duffy attended the four day conference, taking part in a series of workshops and presentations. Duffy also contributed to the “Meet the Cheese Maker” event held on Thursday evening. This event featured 75 cheese companies and allowed for the opportunity to showcase their cheeses and provide samples and information to potential retailers, distributors, fellow cheese makers and the public.

At the garden party on Sept. 7, guests can taste their cheeses and enjoy live music from noon until dark. The event will be behind Lovera’s Grocery store at 95 W. Sixth St. in Krebs. The party is sponsored by Lovera’s and Choc Beer.
