Mike Gundy isn’t talking about quarterbacks -- starters, third-stringers or ones that got away -- so only he knows his reasons ...
On April 23, Wes Lunt was listed as one of three quarterbacks who shared the top spot on a post-spring depth chart at Oklahoma ...
I’ll get this out of the way up front: I thought former Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Bill Young did a credible job ...
Perhaps there was a degree of suspense in this state in regard to which Oklahoma State quarterback would trot onto the field for a Big 12 opener Saturday night against Texas.
But there was no suspense in Austin.
During a Big 12 teleconference Monday, Texas coach Mack Brown was asked if, during preparation for the Stillwater trip, he and his staff ever thought they would face OSU's injured starting quarterback, Wes Lunt. Or did the Longhorn coaches know all along that they would see J.W. Walsh instead?
Said Brown, "What we have to do is look at the video and try to figure out, after 37 years of this stuff, if (Lunt) was on our team, would he be playing or not? And then after watching the injury we did not think he would play."
Video was available of the injury was available for everyone to see because Lunt was injured on the sixth play of a televised nonconference finale against Louisiana. Also -- this is the Internet age -- still photos of the injury were shared on social networks.
Did OSU try to keep Texas in the dark about which quarterback was playing? If so, the Cowboys were smart for at least trying, since their QBs have drastically different strengths. But in this day and age, those kind of things don't stay a secret. And that's why Texas spent all of its prep time getting ready for Walsh, according to Brown.
"That's what's worse," the Texas coach said. "We still didn't stop him."
Walsh directed the Cowboys to 576 yards of total offense.
