Tulsa-based Major League Fishing announced that it’s Championship Round will air on NBC in February, as well as on its parent Outdoor Channel at a later date.

The NBC broadcast is set for 1 p.m. Feb. 9, 2013. It will re-air on Outdoor Channel the following week. The first five rounds of its Summit Cup series will air exclusively on Outdoor Channel.

“We’re delighted to announce that our final round will air on NBC,” Major League Fishing General Manager Jim Wilburn was quoted in a press release this morning. “Our goal is to offer Major League Fishing’s unique brand of competition to a broad audience. We believe that our innovative format, along with the compelling and diverse personalities of our anglers, will appeal to sports fans, not just fishing fans. We believe this broadcast on NBC moves us a big step in that direction.”

Major League Fishing, with lead sponsor Jack Links, is a partnership between the Outdoor Channel and 24 of bass fishing’s top competitors. The unique tournament format has anglers competing as they weigh every legal bass they catch on their boat and watch real-time leader boards on their boats that let them know where the competition stands. The format pressures anglers to keep up with their peers and sometimes sets up a neck-and-neck contest to catch and weigh fish before time runs out. Anglers are not allowed to practice before the event and will not know the destination of the Summit Cup until two days prior.

A tournament series is made up of several elimination rounds. The Summit Cup championship on NBC will be the culmination of two prior elimination rounds. Round 1 will follow the 24-angler field over three days where the field is cut in half. Round 2 is a two day sudden-death event where the field is halved again. In the Championship the final six face off in one day’s competition.

Wilburn called the relationship between Major League Fishing and Outdoor Channel a “terrific long-term partnership.” Wilburn added that the fresh approach and incredible popularity of Major League Fishing’s inaugural event, which recently completed a 13-week run on Outdoor Channel, led league and network officials, as well as participating anglers, to seek a broader audience for the Summit Cup finals.
