David S. Goyer (above) has just finished bringing new life to DC Comics' Superman with "Man of Steel," but next up for the writer-director is a new film adaptation of "The Count of Monte Cristo." He's got some big shoes to fill: The 2002 film with Guy Pearce (below, left) and Jim Caviezel was excellent.

David S. Goyer's credits are heavy with adaptations from the comic book world: the 'Batman' trilogy and the new Superman film among them. But now he's set to helm an adaptation of a centuries-old literary staple: Alexandre Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo."

Goyer is working with screenwriter Michael Robert Johnson on what is reported to be a "graphic novel" style for the film, according to hollywoodreporter.com. The 47-year-old writer is breaking new ground but has a good history with the most important part of any adaptation: working with already-drawn characters in a fresh way.

“During my career I’ve enjoyed re-invigorating and contextualizing classic characters that are relatable to contemporary audiences,” Goyer told hollywoodreporter.com.

He has written some mediocre stuff in the past, but the more people Goyer works with, the better his projects seem to be. "Man of Steel" should be a good indicator how well he knows the pulse of audiences. But he also has some big shoes to fill, as the last film adaptation of Dumas' complex and soap-opera-esque novel was such a success. The 2002 film with Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce was beautiful, and though it truncated by a wide margin Dumas' original work, it was written well.

What I'd like to see from Goyer is to see him bring some of the energy from his TV work ("Blade," "FlashForward") into the "Monte Cristo" adaptation. He's obviously got a talent for developing a compelling story line, and the novel has a lot to offer we haven't yet seen on screen. I'm excited to see how the excitement of Dumas' twisting story will translate to the graphic novel style.
