Trey Millard shouldn’t be graded by the limited touches he received in Saturday’s 34-0 victory over Louisiana-Monroe.
Millard’s versatility simply continues to help the Oklahoma offense. His blocking was important in Saturday’s run scheme, especially paving the way for running backs from his wing position.
“Trey is doing a great job coming backside and lining up at the wing,” OU running back Brennan Clay said. “He does a great job all the time getting chop blocks or just kicking a dude out.”
Millard’s efforts weren’t lost on OU coach Bob Stoops.
“Trey had a great game,” Stoops said of the 6-2, 253-pound fullback. “He is valuable. Trey can line up anywhere. He’s comfortable and we’re comfortable with him really anywhere.”
Millard had two catches for 11 yards and one carry for four yards, which led to this question: Is he too valuable as a facilitator to give him the ball as many times as everybody says you should?
“Yes, he is,” Stoops said. “People fail to realize, if he's running with the ball, Roy Finch is blocking for him. That doesn't work as well. At the end of the day, we do want Trey to be able to catch the ball, run the ball, do all kind of things and as games go, it'll happen.“
“Just, you know, what he did the other day though as you said, facilitating, all those plays you see Trevor (Knight) coming around the edge with, he's blocking right in front of them and blocking well. His guy never makes a tackle, I know that. “
“He does what we ask him to do really well.”
