Diners formerly addicted to the jumbo raviolis, linguine with clams and clam sauce, lasagna and pizzas from Mondo's Italian Restaurant can take heart.
Rob Aloisio confirmed Tuesday that he and his father, Louis, who founded Mondo's in 1969, are closing on a deal to purchase Gemma's Woodfire Kitchen, 3410 S. Peoria Ave., in Brookside.
"My dad is 78, but he's in better shape than all three of his kids," Rob Aloisio said. "He's excited about bringing Mondo's back, and so am I.
"The building is pretty much brand new, but we will make some minor adjustments to make it look more like the old Mondo's. We probably will have it shut down 30 to 45 days and hope to get open in early spring."
Mondo's, known for its family friendly and festive atmosphere, started at 1114 E. 61st St. and moved to 5960 S. Lewis Ave. in 1990. It was sold in 1997 and closed about a year later.
Mondo’s represents the third longtime Tulsa eatery to return this year after being closed for some years. Nelson’s Buffeteria opened last week at 4401 S. Memorial Drive, and S&J Oyster Co. is scheduled for a spring opening at 320 E. First St.
