Ryan Wasser of Pocasset landed an 8-pound, 7-ounce smallmouth bass Saturday to set Oklahoma's new top mark for that game fish species in Oklahoma.
Wasser was practice-fishing Lake Lawtonka for a local tournament set for Sunday, but that contest faded from his thoughts after his 11:30 a.m. catch Saturday.
He was using a 7-foot medium-heavy action spinning setup with 10-pound-test flourocarbon line and a 1/4-ounch shaky head jig from Flatlands Custom Tackle of Mississippi with a "longer style" finesse worm.
The bass hit in about 5 feet of water and immediately stripped line off the reel. Wasser adjusted the drag as he began "pretty much basically yelling" at his mother to get the net, which was stowed in a forward compartment in the bass boat.
"The fish came to the top to where I could see it and I knew that I had a potential record-type smallmouth on," Wasser wrote in an e-mail.
Wasser's mother, Rise Wasser, and his son Rylan, 6, were on the boat with him.
The fish was weighed and witnessed by Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation fisheries workers at lakeside. Official paperwork was completed and Wasser tried to share the fish with others by taking it to Bass Pro Shops in Oklahoma City. The fish did not survive the transfer, however, and Wasser now is on the hunt for a good taxidermist.
"She is a beautiful fish," he said. "A lot of times those bigger ones get more plain green and brown but she has great markings on her."
Wasser said the catch was, "definitely more than a dream come true experience that none of us will ever forget."
