Mike Gundy has been racing to the top of Oklahoma State's coaching victories records for the past several years.
Gundy passed Pat Jones as Oklahoma State’s all-time winningest coach on Saturday.
OSU’s 31-10 victory over Iowa State was Gundy’s 63rd victory as O-State’s coach.
“It is just an extension of what he started here,” said Gundy.
Jones, who now lives in Tulsa and works as a television and radio commentator, has said in recent weeks “I couldn’t be happier that Mike is going to break the record.”
Jones was the head coach when Gundy was recruited and later starred for OSU at quarterback.
Jones gave Gundy his first job in coaching.
They both admit “we are close friends and talk often”.
It was just a matter of time before Jones’ record was broken by Gundy. OSU is 27-5 over the last three years.
“I know he’s happy about it,” said Gundy.
Jones, who coached two future Pro Football Hall of Fame running backs at OSU, had a record of 62-60 when he coached OSU from 1984-94.
Jones coached the Cowboys to three 10-victory seasons.
“I’m happy for our team and I’m happy for coach Jones,” said Gundy.
