Mounds is one of eight schools being honored by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association for its participation in Win-Win Week.

The program, sponsored by the OSSAA and the Peggy and Charles Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma, encourages schools to raise cancer awareness and funds to support cancer research in Oklahoma.

One of 60 schools statewide to officially participate, Mounds was named Class 2A state champion for the second straight year by an OSSAA committee that reviewed each school’s report.

The Eagles will receive a championship trophy during halftime of Friday’s Class 6A football championship game between Jenks and Norman North at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.

Other state champions were Southmoore (6A), Del City (5A), Tecumseh (4A), Purcell (3A), Canton (Class A) and Boise City (Class B).

“Our kids were so excited when we told them we had won again,” said Mendy Mayberry, Mounds yearbook sponsor and coordinator of the event. “This has really been a point of pride for our community.”

Mounds doubled its contribution from the previous year, raising $2,000 in a week-long, district-wide “Pink Out Celebration” leading up to the Eagles’ Sept. 14 home football game against Yale.

Even more than the monetary contribution, Mayberry said it was probably the district-wide involvement that made Mounds’ effort unique. Every grade level from pre-kindergarten to high school and almost every student organization participated, she said.

Art students and the various grade levels produced posters carrying the cancer awareness them that blanketed the campus and football stadium. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes created a survivor and memory wall where students and others could place photographs of loved ones who battled or succumbed to cancer.

A special “Pink-Out’ t-shirt was designed for the week and a powderpuff football game was played one afternoon, featuring high school-aged girls as players, varsity football players as coaches and speech students as announcers.

Fifth-graders won a coin drive competition among the various grade levels, and Sam’s Club at Tulsa Hills donated pink cupcakes to celebrate their victory.

On game night, Mounds football coaches, players, cheerleaders and band members wore pink and fans entering the stadium were encouraged to do the same. Cancer survivors were honored, and stadium announcers gave cancer statistics to raise awareness throughout the game.

Mayberry will be in Stillwater to accept the Eagles' trophy, along with senior student and Eagles mascot Tyson Smith, superintendent Alfred Gaches and high school principal Steven Sturgeon.
