Former Tulsa Philharmonic conductor Murry Sidlin will not be able to take part in Saturday's Signature Symphony concert.
We received an email late Tuesday from Signature Symphony artistic director Barry Epperley, who said Sidlin was suffering from back problems to such a degree that he was unable to travel, much less conduct.
"He left me a message Sunday evening, and he just sounded awful," Epperley said. "He said he couldn't stand, he couldn't sit, that he was just in agony. Apparently he went to his doctor on Monday, and they did an MRI. The upshot is the doctor told him he shouldn't fly for a while.
"Murry told me this Tuesday, and said 'If I could get down on my knees, I would to tell you how sorry I am,' " Epperley said.
The concert will go on, with Epperley conducting. He led the orchestra's rehearsal on Monday, hoping that Sidlin would still be able to take over.
"But now I really have to dig in on everything," he said.
The concert will be 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the VanTrease PACE, 10300 E. 81st St. Former Tulsan Peter Simon will be the soloist for Franz Liszt's "Totentanz," and the orchestra will perform Saint-Saens' Symphony No. 3, the "Organ," and the Suite No. 2 of "Ancient Airs and Dances" by Resphigi.
