Some opening night college football thoughts run as follows.
Mike Leach would have been better off keeping his amateur stand-up comedian job. His Washington State team is terrible. His quarterback looked lost. The defense is beyond horrific. He's lucky USC is not on the schedule, as this team could have scored 100. He has the kind of players who celebrate an eight-yard gain on fourth and ten. They taunt foes after tackling somebody after a 20-yard gain. Washed Out State did not score a touchdown. And these same people averaged about 30 last season. The spread is dead.
BYU is all right. Its quarterback runs too much. Body parts could fly off later.
The only thing worse than Leach's team was the Pac Ten officiating crew. This conference has had a long-standing reputation for officiating incompetence. Remember the refs who lost the football during Oregon versus OU? Anybody going up against one of these Pac Ten crews should get ready to sue.
Rice drew a few thousand for its season opener versus UCLA and should give up football.
South Carolina is no top ten team.
The NFL replacement zebras are pathetic. What rules they do know, they seem afraid to enforce. According to Vegas, some strong pro trends have already become obvious due to zebra flaws. One, fewer penalties are being called, which will favor physical teams. Two, the home teams are apt to enjoy an extra advantage, as the replacement clowns will be worried about getting out of town safely.
