Gretel eggplant is an AAS 2009 winner.
Each year All-America Selections chooses the top plants and vegetables for the coming year. Independent judges test hundreds of varieties of vegetables and plants to find the very best for consumers.
The 2009 winners were just announced and will be available in retail stores next year.
My favorite pick in the vegetable category is a white eggplant called Gretel. It's an early variety with glossy mini eggplant that are sweet and tender. The plants are pretty small, about 3-feet wide and tall, making them a good choice for backyard gardeners with limited space.
Other winners include the Lambkin melon, a sweet fruit with a white, juicy interior. Lambkin has a pretty yellow-green exterior.
The third winning vegetable is Honey Bear squash, which was bred to be baked and served in the half shell. Judges noted its sweet flavor, high yield and resistance to powdery mildew. Honey Bear was bred at the University of New Hampshire.
You can find find these vegetables as both seeds and plants in many local stores next year.
