Kansas State held steady at No. 2 in the BCS standings after a 44-30 victory over Oklahoma State in which both starting quarterbacks left the game due to injury in the third quarter.
Afterward, OSU coach Mike Gundy was asked if K-State should be viewed as a national championship contender.
“I think there are probably four or five teams now that, in somebody’s opinion, have an opportunity to play for that,” he said.
“We would love for somebody from our league have an opportunity to play for it. I don’t watch the other teams enough, but (the Wildcats) are a good football team. They don’t make mistakes. They have got a very mature quarterback that makes plays and they could be arguably the best team in the country in special teams.”
Alabama, Kansas State, Oregon and Notre Dame -- all unbeaten -- are 1-2-3-4 in the updated BCS standings. Alabama and Notre Dame survived close calls to remain in the top four spots.
Of course, before the OSU-KSU game, ample attention was being paid to a Pitt-Notre Dame game on press box televisions at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
As Notre Dame’s kicker was preparing to boot a critical field goal, someone (presumably wearing purple) in the press box yelled “Noonan!”
“Noonan!” is “Caddyshack” lingo for miss. It didn’t work in the movie or in the press box. Danny Noonan made the putt. Notre Dame made the kick, Pitt missed a kick later. And the Fighting Irish lived to play another day.
So, with plenty of competition for a spot in the BCS title game, Kansas State still must find ways to impress voters -- with our without Collin Klein -- in what remains of this season’s college football’s beauty pagent. Snyder said last week that he doesn’t know what a style point is. Good for him.
