The history of Notre Dame and Oklahoma football, two legendary college programs, will likely dominate the week leading up to Saturday’s game with the Irish in Norman.
However, this game could provide plenty of drama with both teams ranked in the top 10.
In addition, these are teams that are a contrast in styles.
Oklahoma loves to throw it all over the field and score points.
Notre Dame wants to play a conservative game, play defense and figure out someway to win the game late.
That’s what Notre Dame has done the past two weeks against Stanford and BYU.
That’s the identity of the Irish. Nothing flashy. Just seven straight victories.
“They are confident,” said Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly. “They worked too hard to not appreciate and undrerstand how tough it is to win college football games across the country.
“They are going to be in close games. They are going to be in tight games during the course of 12 games, 13 games. You’re going to have to win those games.”
OU coach Bob Stoops said the game with Notre Dame is probably the most anticipated game in Norman since top-ranked Nebraska came to OU in 2000 against the second-ranked Sooners. Oklahoma beat the Huskers enroute to an unbeaten season and the national championship.
Much of this game will ride on the arm of OU quarterback Landry Jones, who has been terrific lately.
“Landry was fantastic,” said Stoops, after OU hammered Kansas on Saturday.
