In a surprise move, Nintendo released a budget version of the 3DS portable game system that drops one of the Ds. The 2DS plays 3DS games, but doesn't project them in the glasses-free 3D that was supposed to be the system's selling point. It's also cheaper at $130, and comes in a non-foldable format that resembles the tablets kids love nowadays.
Beyond that, Nintendo's move is one of the last nails in the coffin for the 3D craze. Tickets for 3D movies now sell much less than their same-movie 2D counterparts, 3DTV sales never took off and content providers like ESPN are giving up on 3D channels.
Nintendo was one of the last holdouts, as every 3DS game runs in 3D. But it looks like they no longer consider 3D a must-have feature if it means getting the price down.
