Constantine Kitsopoulos has been named artistic director of OK Mozart
Conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos, music director of the Queens Symphony Orchestra and founder of the Chatham Opera, has been chosen to be artistic director of the OK Mozart International Festival in Bartlesville.
Kitsopoulos has been a guest conductor at OK Mozart for the past two seasons, leading the festival's orchestra in residence, the Amici New York Orchestra.
Executive director Shane Jewell said that Kitsopoulos' work and rapport with the orchestra was one of the reasons for his selection, adding that, "When Constantine presented his ideas for the festival's future to the board of directors, it was clear that is someone who can lead this very special Oklahoma event into the future with an exciting and innovative artistic vision."
Adria Benjamin, violist with the Amici New York, said "Many of the musicians of (the orchestra) have had previous experience working Constantine on a variety of projects, and know that he is the perfect fit as the new Artistic Director. He is a brilliant musician and conductor, a wonderful colleague and a great educator. He is terrific to work with, and we are all excited by the possibilities that he, his talents and vision bring to OK Mozart."
Kitsopoulos' career has ranged from conducting symphony and opera to serving as music director for the recent Tony Award-winning revival of "Porgy and Bess" on Broadway. Besides his work with the Queens Symphony and the Chatham Opera, he is also music director of the Festival of the Arts BOCA, a 10-day cultural event in Boca Raton, Fla., that encompasses classical and popular music, theatre, film and literature.
"I have known about (OK Mozart) since its inception and have long admired its accomplishments," Kitsopoulos said. "I am very much looking forward to working the Amici New York Orchestra, soloists and chamber musicians to create programming that will unify the various elements of OK Mozart so we can continue to bring the highest quality musical performances to the area."
