Over the past 10 years, the tailgating culture at Oklahoma State has exploded. Now, the school is getting some recognition for it.
Southern Living announced its 15 contenders for the second-annual “South’s Best Tailgate” competition, and OSU is one of three Big 12 schools included. The 15 schools will be featured in the September issue of the magazine, which hits newsstands Aug. 23.
The finalists were chosen based on spirit, gameday tradition, powerhouse status and style, according to a news release.
Fans will determine the winner and can vote once a day until Sept. 30 at
southernliving.com/tailgate or by smartphone using the Digimarc Discover application. Votes cast on Saturdays count twice, and voters also are entered into a drawing for $2,500.
The magazine will announce the best tailgate at a home game this fall. The schools up for the award:
Appalachian State: Small conference. Big spirit. Plus, a scenic mountain setting.
Clemson: Can the 2012 winner clinch the title once again?
Florida State: Palm trees and Florida sunshine. Jealous?
Louisiana State: LSU kneauxs how to have fun. Bring on the crawfish!
Marshall: The Thundering Herd goes big – and home and away.
Oklahoma State: A tailgating crowd that has quadrupled in the past decade.
Texas A&M: Johnny Football can play the game. But can he tailgate?
Alabama: No ticket? No problem. Thousands come for the pre-game action.
Georgia: Game day is serious in Athens, and not just between the hedges.
Mississippi: The Grove at Ole Miss finished a close second in our 2012 contest.
Tennessee: Have riverfront stadium, will tailgate – on boats.
Texas: Don’t mess with the Longhorns’ Texas-size tailgates.
Vanderbilt: Preppy tailgate central: bow ties, blazers, and pearls.
Virginia Tech: Hospitality reigns: Away fans always feel welcome.
West Virginia: Coonskin caps and crowds in perpetual John Denver sing-along.
