STILLWATER -- As the community of Denton, Texas, mourns the loss of a high school student, several Oklahoma State football players honored the memory of their former teammate Tuesday.
Receiver Josh Stewart said after practice Tuesday he and his fellow Cowboys who played with 18-year-old Nathan Maki -- J.W. Walsh, Jimmy Bean and Dominic Ramacher -- joined many others from Denton Guyer in wearing blue, their high school's color, in remembrance of the senior fullback who was found dead after being shot in the head in a field Saturday night.
"I remember watching him play freshman year," Stewart said. "I remember saying, 'He's a good player. He's going to be good when he matures and gets to his junior and senior year.'
"Sure enough, he was a good player. It was very sad news to hear that he passed away. We definitely support his family and hope everything turns out (for the best)."
The campaign to wear blue Tuesday was spread on social media by Walsh and Stewart, who said he heard other area schools also participated.
The Denton Record-Chronicle reports an investigation is ongoing into the possibly accidental death of Maki, whose head coach was Walsh's father, John Walsh.
"The position I'm in, a leadership position, we have to lead through this, but we feel empty, too," John Walsh told a Dallas TV station over the weekend. "My knees buckled when I heard the news, and I've been devastated all day."
