Joseph Randle, Oklahoma State’s preseason All-Big 12 running back, doesn’t start for the Cowboys.

Clarification: He starts on “real” game days. But he doesn’t start when he plays a new video game.

Randle loves playing “NCAA Football 13.” It’s the game in which Barry Sanders (and former Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III) won a fan vote to grace the game’s cover.

When Randle plays games using Oklahoma State as his team, he starts Sanders and brings himself off the bench.

“I let Barry start just to show a little respect,” Randle said.

Randle was asked if the respect is a “Sanders thing” or a “Wichita thing.” Sanders was a lightly recruited prospect from Wichita, Kan, who won the 1988 Heisman Trophy while at OSU. Randle is from Wichita, too.

“It’s a Wichita thing actually,” Randle said. “I’ve got to show respect to the ones before because he kind of paved the way. It’s a big deal getting to say you are from Wichita and Barry is from there, the same place. So it’s a big deal to me.”

Randle said he doesn’t keep himself on the bench very long when he plays the video game. He puts himself in early and often.

“We split the carries,” Randle said. “I just don’t (use pass plays) very much, so we’ve got the whole game to work with.”

There are apparently more than enough carries to satisfy both runners, and then some. Said Randle, “It’s almost a three-back system because I play Jeremy (Smith) too, so it’s all good.”
