AMES, Iowa – Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he was “thinking about the next one” as he walked in for a post-game press conference on Saturday.
The Sooners were very business-like in a 35-20 victory over Iowa State that put the Sooners at 6-2.
It sets up the final month with a chance that Oklahoma might be able to reach a BCS bowl depending heavily on what other teams do.
OU can’t do anything about other teams. All the Sooners can do is try to win the final four - Baylor, at West Virginia, Oklahoma State and at TCU.
Those all look very winnable if OU plays like it did at Iowa State.
The Cyclones have little offense but they do play some wicked defense. That’s what makes Landry Jones’ big day so impressive. Jones passed for 405 yards and four touchdowns. He led OU to 593 total yards. That’s a bunch of real estate against a pretty good defense.
“You have to step up and make plays,” said ISU coach Paul Rhoads. “Their guys did and we didn’t.”
After the offense struggled in the loss to Notre Dame, with just 15 rushing yards and one touchdown, the Sooners were back tyo form against the Cyclones.
“I think the ability to run the football helped,” said OU coach Bob Stoops.
Actually, running the ball was terrific for the Sooners. Given the level of defense played by Iowa State, it might have been one of the best games of the year for OU’s offensive line.
Brennan Clay ran for 157 yards (the Sooners had 186 rushing yards).
Jones was not sacked and was seldom pressured.
It is never easy to win Ames. In addition, the Sooners were coming off a huge disappointment against Notre Dame.
It was far from perfect but exactly the kind of kick-start OU needed for the rest of the season.
