Underwood, 30, will portray the much-beloved governess Maria and acclaimed British actor Stephen Moyer ("True Blood") will play Capt. Von Trapp in the TV special.
Announced today, joining her in the cast will be Tony Award winners Audra McDonald as Mother Abbess, Laura Benanti as Elsa Schrader and Christian Borle as Max Dettwiler, reports deadline.com.
The three-hour television production is based on the original 1959 Broadway production which starred Mary Martin as Maria and Theodore Bikel as Captain Von Trapp. The special, airing Dec. 5 on NBC, is being executive produced by Academy Award ceremony producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan.
