TechCon was supposed to be an epic gathering of local gamers from across Green Country. Now in it's fifth year, more than 100 students were planning to gather at Central Tech in Sapulpa for a massive smorgasbord of LAN parties, consoles and even tabletop games. It was a great tool to promote the school's Network Security classes, and had drawn in local vendors and corporate sponsors, as well as given the local gaming community a place to meet other gaming enthusiasts.

Then, just 5 days before it was supposed to launch, the school backed out. Citing the recent national tragedies involving gun-related violence, Central Tech said that they supported the intent of the event but also felt that they must "uphold social responsibility." In a statement on Facebook they explained that "hosting a tournament depicting graphic violent images may detract from Central Tech's mission and be construed as insensitive considering Central Tech is an educational institution - a school."

The school's reasons for canceling the event were understandable, despite the short notice with which they did so. Still, the decision left a lot of students and gamers feeling let down and wondering what to do with their Saturday. Thankfully, another group stepped in and offered to help.

OKGamers.com - a grassroots movement to "make Oklahoma a place for gamers" worked to find a replacement venue and scored big - The Tulsa Event Center at 26th and Memorial. Immediately, the invites went out on Facebook, totaling around 1500 invites in just over an hour. As of this writing, they've got almost 100 attendees committed to coming. Not bad for only about 2 days notice.

To help pay for the space, they're requesting a $10.00 location fee, which can be paid using Paypal before Saturday or at the door. They've promised to use profits to help buy refreshments and will donate the remainder to an anti-violence charity.

The event is Saturday, January 26th. To get full details, check out the official Facebook Event.
