I discovered the other night that Benjamin Britten goes well with Irish whiskey.

Kostis Protopapas brought the Tulsa Opera studio artists to the Tulsa Press Club Wednesday night to reprise their Britten program: 45 minutes of folk songs, art songs and opera arias (with commentary provided by Kostis) while the patrons sipped their Press Club libations.

Protopapas started the evening by saying he had always been driven to take classical music into bars, which struck me odd at first, but I think I got the music better for having a drink in my hand than I did the first time I saw the same program at a meeting of the English Speaking Union.

The event drew a few opera lovers and didn't drive away the regulars at the bar, some of whom seemed genuinely intrigued by the show.

The acoustics in the rooms seemed to favor the tenor, whose version of "The Foggy, Foggy Dew" and an aria from Billy Budd were clear and beautiful.

Some of the lyrics for the sopranos got muddied in the room, but their voices were still lovely.

I'm going to NYC this summer to catch a Philharmonic performance of Britten's "War Requiem." I wonder if I should take my hip flask with me to the show.

Here's an incredibly slow version of "Foggy, Foggy Dew" with some banal chatter thrown in. I prefer the Press Club version.:
