I travel Riverside Drive every weekday and often on weekends. I don't go for jogs, runs or walks along the Arkansas River because, frankly, I'm not much of a jogger, runner or walker. Nevertheless, I am impressed with the work being done in the River Parks.

I will say that it is slightly difficult to view the work along the river while driving along Riverside Drive. One needs to pay strict attention to traffic during rush hour, or anytime for that matter. There are some wicked curves along the route and no median for much of it. I remain amazed that there haven't been more wrecks at that swerve under the pedestrian bridge.

I don't expect Riverside to ever become the parkway that I would like it to be. The city made a half-hearted effort once to widen the street and straighten it out. There were plans to expand the park on both sides of Riverside and close off all street entrances other than the main arterials. That went nowhere. Don't you just love it when someone is making a left turn onto, say, 34th Street at 5 p.m.? What can they be thinking?!

What we have with Riverside Drive is a bumpy, narrow street that remains one of the main entrances to downtown Tulsa. It's a beautiful drive that has become embarrassing because of the state of the street.

But enough about that. The park looks great, despite all the churned up dirt. The section from 21st to 31st is really nice. Native stone along the walkways, new, wide paths, new lighting, new trees. That new bridge across Crow Creek is eye-catching.

Most of this progress is due to the Kaiser Family Foundation, which is responsible for so many projects in Tulsa. And other companies and foundations are chipping in. The QuikTrip Corp. is making progress on the new public area at 41st and Riverside.

Soon the park work on both sides of the river will be completed. It's going to be an even better place than it is now. So, if we could just do something about Riverside Drive. …
