A good dog food is the healthiest thing for our furry little friends. I am not one to share scraps from the table.

But on a very rare occasion, perhaps a first birthday for a healthy pup, a small amount of a specially prepared treat in moderation is OK.

My puppy just turned one this week and I made her a birthday cake using a recipe for dogs. She enjoyed a small piece outside on the patio where the crumbs don't count.

It came out the consistency of a moist muffin, sweetened by peanut butter, carrot, apple and honey.

And, yes, people could eat it too.

I had several requests for this cake, which I decorated with carrot curls. So here it is!

Peanut Butter Pup Cake

1 cup white or whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2/3 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup honey
1/3 cup shredded apple
1 egg
Glaze:
1 tablespoon peanut butter
1 teaspoon Canola oil

1. Preheat oven to 350.

2. Mix together flour and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients and mix well.

3. Pour into a ring mold or small casserole dish sprayed with a nonstick spray. Cook for at least 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

4. Cool and mix peanut butter with the oil. Spread the cake with the glaze.
