Pets still displaced by last month's Moore tornado will be up for adoption at the Pet-Adopt-A-Thon from 1 - 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds, 615 E. Robinson St. in Norman.
"As the community continues to heal from the tragedy of May 20, it's important that we bring closure for the animals as well," said Justin L. Scally, national director of the American Humane Association's Red Star Animal Emergency Services, which deployed to help rescue and shelter animal victims of the storm.
Gayla Sesher, an animal welfare supervisor for the City of Moore said many of the pets displaced by the storm have been reunited with their families but others are still in need of loving homes.
The adoption event is presented by the American Humane Association and the City of Moore.
During the event, dog and cat storm survivors, as well as other animals at the shelter will be up for adoption.
Adopted animals will have been microchipped, vaccinated and spayed or neutered. The pet adoption fee is $70 with an approved application, and the City of Moore will use the revenue to start a spay/neuter fund.
Oklahoma residency is not required to adopt a pet at the event.
Families looking for a pet that day should expect to have a large number of animals to choose from.
